Without a car, stay in Chamonix centre, where the Aiguille du Midi, Montenvers and Brévent all start. With a car or a family, an apartment up-valley in Les Praz or Les Tines is quieter and better value. Argentière suits skiers and hikers; Les Houches and Saint-Gervais are the cheaper alternatives.
