Where to Stay in the Algarve: Lagos, Carvoeiro, Tavira or Sagres
With a car, base yourself on the central cliff coast around Carvoeiro and add a night or two in Lagos. Without one, pick Lagos or Tavira, both on the railway. Albufeira is for big resorts, Sagres for wind and surf.
The Algarve is a strip of coast about two hours' drive long, and the real choice is not which beach but which kind of base. West of Faro are the cliffs, sea caves and coves that fill every photograph of Portugal's south; east of it, flat beaches on lagoon islands and towns that stay Portuguese out of season. Cliffs or a proper town? And will you have a car?

We went in late October 2025 with two kids and split four nights between two rentals: three in a sea-view penthouse in Carvoeiro, then one in a house in central Lagos. For a first visit with a car, that is the order we recommend: the central cliff coast, then the west. Four more areas follow for other kinds of trip.
The Short Answer
| Best for | Area | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-time visitors | Lagos | Hotel Marina Rio | Walkable old town and beaches, bus station next door, boat trips from the marina opposite |
| Families with a car | Carvoeiro | Pestana Palm Gardens | Townhouses with kitchens, pool, central for the cliff coast |
| Couples | Olhos de Água (Albufeira) | Velamar Boutique Hotel | Adults-friendly, quiet, close to Falésia beach |
| Big resort, beach on the doorstep | Praia da Falésia | EPIC SANA Algarve | Direct beach access, spa, five outdoor pools |
| Without a car | Tavira | Vila Galé Tavira | Central, on the railway, island beaches by ferry |
| Budget, surf and wild coast | Sagres | Casa Azul Sagres | Rooms and apartments from about €50, walk to the beaches |
| Early flight or late arrival | Faro | 3HB Faro | Old town on foot, about 15 minutes from the airport |
Where we stayed: a sea-view penthouse in Carvoeiro (three nights) and Casa Sonja in central Lagos (one night), both on Airbnb, October 2025.
How the Algarve Is Laid Out
Think of the coast in three parts. The west, from Cabo de São Vicente and Sagres through Lagos to Portimão, faces the Atlantic: wilder, windier, cooler water. The centre, from Portimão to Albufeira, is the cliff coast: Carvoeiro, Benagil, Praia da Marinha and the Seven Hanging Valleys trail. The east, from Faro to Spain, is the Ria Formosa lagoon: Olhão, Tavira and sand beaches on barrier islands reached by ferry or footbridge.

Everyone flies into Faro. By car, allow about 15 minutes to Faro town, 35 to Tavira or Albufeira, 45–50 to Carvoeiro, 1 hour to 1 hour 15 to Lagos and about 1 hour 30 to Sagres. The A22 motorway has electronic tolls only, so take the toll device your rental company offers; the N125 runs parallel and is slower.
Without a car, the regional railway links Lagos, Portimão, Faro, Olhão and Tavira; Faro to Lagos takes about 1 hour 40. From the airport, city bus 14 or 16 reaches Faro station in 15–20 minutes. Albufeira's station is about 7 km from town, and Carvoeiro and Sagres have none.
The constraint most people miss is how different the two halves are. If you came for sea arches and coves, staying in Tavira means an hour's drive each way. If you want shallow water for small children, the cliff beaches are small and fill up fast. Decide which coast you came for, then pick the town: one base for a short stay, two for a week.
Carvoeiro — Cliffs on the Doorstep
Carvoeiro is a former fishing village in the municipality of Lagoa, built around a small beach between two headlands, with villas, apartment complexes and a few resorts on the plateau above. It sits in the middle of the cliff coast: the Algar Seco rock formations are a walk away, Benagil and its sea cave about ten minutes by car.
It suits families and couples with a car who want days on the coast and a quiet base. It is not a town like Lagos or Tavira: the centre is a few steep streets of restaurants around the beach, and from most villas you will drive to dinner.

Best for: families and couples with a car who want the cliffs, coves and coastal walks.
Pros
- Central for the most photographed stretch of coast: Benagil, Marinha, Algar Seco
- Start of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail
- Plenty of apartments and townhouses with kitchens and pools
Cons
- Steep streets; many villas are a drive from the village
- No train station; you need a car
- The village beach is small and crowded in summer
Getting around: Benagil about 10 minutes by car, Praia da Marinha about 15, Silves about 25, Lagos 35–40, Faro airport 45–50.
Where to stay in Carvoeiro
- Budget — Carvoeiro Garden Hotel — studios with kitchenettes, from about €57 a night. Pool, free parking, 14 minutes' walk to the beach.
- Mid-range — Pestana Palm Gardens — furnished townhouses, from about €61 a night in October. A kitchen and a garden pool for families.
- Splurge — Tivoli Carvoeiro — five-star resort above Vale Covo, from about €123. Family connecting rooms for two adults and two children.
- Mid-range — Sea-view penthouse — whole two-bedroom apartment on Airbnb, around €115 a night in October 2025. This is where we stayed.
Our stay: We booked this top-floor flat for three nights, two adults and two kids, for about €350 in total, so roughly €115 a night. The listing has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a sea-view terrace above Praia do Paraíso, a couple of minutes' walk from the village centre. That is less per night, for four, than Tivoli Carvoeiro's cheapest room in our October 2026 checks. Parking is on the street, and from mid-July through August the host takes Saturday-to-Saturday bookings only. The listing is still live, rated 4.63 from about 270 reviews. For the cliff walks from here, see our Algarve road trip.
Lagos — The Best All-Round Town
Lagos works as a town first and a resort second. The walled old centre has cobbled streets, squares and plenty of restaurants. The bus station is on the riverfront avenue, the marina and train station across a footbridge, and the cliff beaches (Batata, Pinhão, Dona Ana, Camilo) a 5–25-minute walk south. Boat and kayak trips to the Ponta da Piedade arches leave from the marina.
It suits first-timers, anyone without a car and families who like to walk out for dinner. It is not quiet: the old town is busy in summer, with a lively bar scene, and parking is scarce.
Best for: first-timers, travellers without a car, and anyone who wants a real town as a base.
Pros
- Walkable old town with beaches close by
- Train and bus connections along the coast
- Boat trips to Ponta da Piedade
- Easy day trips to Sagres
Cons
- Crowded and noisy in July and August
- Parking in and around the old town is difficult
- An hour or more from Faro airport
Getting around: Praia Dona Ana about 15 minutes on foot, Ponta da Piedade 5 minutes by car, Sagres 30–35 minutes, Carvoeiro 35–40, Faro airport 1 hour to 1 hour 15.
Where to stay in Lagos
- Budget — LagosMar Story Hotel — family-run hotel in the old town, from about €60 a night. Rooftop terrace and rooms for two adults and a child; about 5 minutes' walk from Praia da Batata.
- Mid-range — Hotel Marina Rio — hotel facing the marina, from about €120. Its rooftop pool is heated from October to April, and the bus station is next door.
- Splurge — Lagos Avenida Hotel — on the riverfront avenue, from about €200. Pool and marina views.
- Mid-range — Casa Sonja — whole two-bedroom house on Airbnb, around €140 for one night in October 2025. This is where we stayed.
Our stay: We came on from Carvoeiro for a single night: two adults and two kids, about €140, booked non-refundable. The listing describes a quiet residential street about three minutes from the centre, with two bedrooms, a kitchen, a patio, pets allowed and parking on the property, which counts for a lot in Lagos. According to the listing, the house has been renovated since our visit. One night in Lagos is a stopover rather than a stay: give it two or three nights if you want the beaches, a boat trip to Ponta da Piedade and an evening drive to Cabo de São Vicente.
Albufeira — Resorts, Beaches, Long Evenings
Albufeira is the Algarve's biggest resort town, and it splits in two. The old town above Praia dos Pescadores and the "Strip" in Areias de São João are bars, restaurants and late nights. East of town, Olhos de Água and the red cliffs of Praia da Falésia are lined with large, quieter resorts in the pinewoods.
It suits travellers who want a big hotel with pools and a beach on the doorstep, or nightlife. It is not the place for a small-town feel.

Best for: resort holidays, families who want everything on site, and nightlife.
Pros
- Widest choice of big hotels with pools and family rooms
- Praia da Falésia, one of the longest beaches on the coast
- Close to Faro airport
Cons
- The old town and the Strip are noisy at night
- The train station is 7 km from town
- Heavily built up; little local life in summer
Getting around: Praia da Falésia about 15 minutes by car from the old town, Carvoeiro about 30, Faro airport 35–40.
Where to stay in Albufeira
- Budget — Vila Recife Hotel — simple central hotel with a pool, from about €57 a night. Five minutes' walk from Praia dos Pescadores.
- Mid-range — Velamar Boutique Hotel — adults-friendly boutique hotel in Olhos de Água, from about €68. Pool and free parking; good for couples.
- Mid-range, family — Grande Real Santa Eulália — five-star resort with direct access to Santa Eulália beach, from about €176. Several pools including children's pools, plus studios and villas.
- Splurge — EPIC SANA Algarve — resort in the pinewood above Praia da Falésia, from about €187. Direct beach access, a spa, an indoor pool and five outdoor pools.
Tavira and the East — Lagoon, Islands, Local Life
Tavira is the most handsome town on the coast: a river crossed by an old bridge, churches, tiled façades and no high-rises. The beaches are on Ilha de Tavira, a sandbar reached by ferry, and at Praia do Barril with its anchor cemetery. Olhão, 20 minutes west, is a working fishing port with ferries to the Ria Formosa islands.
It suits travellers who want a quieter, more local base, families with small children and anyone without a car. It is not cliff country: Benagil is about an hour away.

Best for: slower trips, small children, and travellers without a car.
Pros
- Real town life all year
- Long, flat island beaches
- On the railway, about 35–40 minutes to Faro
Cons
- An hour's drive to the cliff coast
- Beaches need a ferry or a walk across the lagoon
- Fewer evening options outside summer
Getting around: Ilha de Tavira by ferry, Praia do Barril about 15 minutes by car, Olhão 20, Faro airport about 35. See our eastern Algarve day.
Where to stay in Tavira
- Budget — Hotel Don Rodrigues — hotel at the entrance to Tavira on the N125, from about €68 a night. Outdoor pool and countryside views; you will want a car.
- Mid-range — OZADI Tavira Hotel — modern hotel on the edge of town, from about €91. Pool and quadruple rooms.
- Mid-range, central — Vila Galé Tavira — central hotel by the river, from about €111. Pool, spa and family suites for four.
- Splurge — Pousada Convento de Tavira — rooms around the courtyard of a 16th-century convent, from about €214. A few minutes' walk from the bridge, with an outdoor pool.
Sagres and the West — Wind, Surf and Big Skies
Sagres is a small, low-rise town at the south-western tip of Portugal, with Cabo de São Vicente 6 km further on. Tonel is a surf beach facing the Atlantic swell; Mareta, in the bay, is calmer. The town is mostly surf schools, cafés and guesthouses inside the Costa Vicentina natural park.
It suits surfers, walkers and anyone who prefers wind and space to sunloungers. It is not a resort: cooler water, constant wind, quiet evenings. Staying a night lets you watch the sunset at the cape without the drive back in the dark.

Best for: surfers, hikers, and a quieter night at the end of the road.
Pros
- Some of the cheapest well-reviewed rooms on the coast
- Surf and coastal walks on the doorstep
- Sunset at Cabo de São Vicente without a long drive
Cons
- Windy and cooler, even in summer
- Small: limited restaurants, especially out of season
- No train; about 1 hour 30 minutes from Faro airport
Getting around: Cabo de São Vicente 10 minutes by car, Tonel and Mareta on foot, Lagos 30–35 minutes.
Where to stay in Sagres
- Budget — Casa Azul Sagres — rooms and studios, from about €47 a night. Family rooms, 5 minutes' walk from the beaches.
- Mid-range, apartments — Sagres Time Apartamentos — self-catering apartments in the centre, from about €65. Heated saltwater pool and balconies.
- Mid-range — Memmo Baleeira — design hotel above the harbour, from about €89. Ocean-view pool.
- Splurge — Pousada de Sagres — clifftop hotel facing the fort and the cape, from about €93 in October. Outdoor pool and sea-view rooms.
Faro — Arrivals, Departures and an Underrated Old Town
Faro is where you land, and most people drive straight out. It deserves a night at either end of a trip: the walled old town is compact, boats run from the marina to the island beaches, and the train and bus stations are a walk from the centre.
It is not a beach base: Praia de Faro is on a sandbar near the airport.

Best for: first or last nights, and travellers without a car.
Pros
- About 15 minutes from the airport
- Train and bus connections both ways
- Compact old town
Cons
- No beach in town
- The coast's cliff beaches are 45 minutes or more away
Getting around: airport 15 minutes by car or 15–20 by bus, Olhão 15, Tavira about 30.
Where to stay in Faro
- Budget — Best Western Hotel Dom Bernardo — central hotel near the marina, from about €64 a night.
- Mid-range — Hotel Made Inn Faro — central hotel, from about €76. Several family and connecting room types.
- Splurge — 3HB Faro — five-star hotel in the centre, from about €171. Family rooms and an infinity pool.
What It Costs, and When to Book
Our October 2026 checks show three price bands. Well-reviewed budget hotels start at about €50–70 a night, mostly in Sagres, Lagos and Faro. Good mid-range hotels sit around €85–130. Five-star resorts start at about €170–230, with the top addresses much higher. Our whole-home rentals for four cost around €115 and €140 a night in late October 2025.
July and August are a different market: rooms cost far more, family rooms and villas sell out months ahead, and some owners, like our Carvoeiro host, take only Saturday-to-Saturday bookings. For summer with children, book three to six months out. May, June, September and October are warm, cheaper and easy to book a few weeks ahead. Winter is cheapest, but small places like Carvoeiro and Sagres go quiet.
Families should look at apartment and townhouse complexes: a kitchen, separate bedrooms and often a pool, for less than two hotel rooms. Check whether breakfast and parking are included, especially around the old towns of Lagos and Faro. Many outdoor pools are unheated outside summer; in October, look for one marked heated, like Hotel Marina Rio's.
Albufeira, Lagoa (which includes Carvoeiro), Portimão, Loulé, Olhão and Faro, among others, charge a tourist tax of €1–2 per adult per night, capped at a few nights, with children up to about 12 exempt. Read the cancellation terms too: our Lagos booking was non-refundable, a common way to get a lower rate.
Where This Fits in the Trip
Our five-day Algarve road trip follows the same logic: Carvoeiro and the Seven Hanging Valleys first, a day in the east (Olhão, Tavira, Praia do Barril), then Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente, with Silves on the way back. For a longer trip, our Portugal travel guide covers seasons, driving and linking the south with Porto.
