Where to Stay in Ninh Binh: Tam Coc, Trang An, Van Long or Pu Luong

Sleep in or just outside Tam Coc village for a first visit; move into the Trang An countryside for quiet and views, and treat Pu Luong as a separate two-night trip, not a day out.

Limestone karsts and rice fields around Tam Coc, the most popular base in Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh is not one place but a spread of villages, rivers and karsts about 100 km south of Hanoi. The real question is how close to the boats you want to sleep: Tam Coc village puts you a short walk from the rowing boats and the restaurants, the countryside around Trang An and Hoa Lu trades that for silence and views, and Ninh Binh city is where the trains stop and few visitors should sleep.

We spent two nights in Tam Coc in November 2019 with two kids, between stays in Hanoi, on a trip that also took in China. We had booked a night in Pu Luong to follow but cancelled it, so that valley is covered from research, not memory. Hotels and prices were checked in October 2026.

How Ninh Binh Is Laid Out

Think of a triangle of karst country west of Ninh Binh city. Tam Coc sits at the southern point, a village built around the wharf where the Ngo Dong River boats leave, with Bich Dong Pagoda a few kilometres west and Mua Cave about 2 km north. Trang An, the UNESCO-listed boat circuit, and the old capital of Hoa Lu are 15 to 20 minutes north, with Bai Dinh Pagoda further west. Van Long and Kenh Ga lie another 20 to 30 minutes north-west. Ninh Binh city, with the railway station, is about 7 km east of Tam Coc. Pu Luong is a different trip: a mountain valley in Thanh Hoa province, three to four hours west by road.

Karst landscape around Tam Coc, Ninh Binh
Tam Coc is the hub; everything else is a bike or Grab ride away

Hanoi is about 100 km away: 1.5 to 2 hours by car or limousine van, which most Tam Coc hotels can arrange. Trains to Ninh Binh take around two hours, then it is 15 minutes by taxi to Tam Coc. From Noi Bai Airport, allow two to two and a half hours.

You do not need a car. Hotels rent bicycles and scooters, Grab has covered Tam Coc and Ninh Binh city since June 2024, and drivers are easy to book. The land between the karsts is flat, so cycling is easy.

The constraint most people miss is the day-trip tide. Tours from Hanoi reach Tam Coc and Trang An mid-morning and leave mid-afternoon; sleep here and you can be on the water early or late. Then distance: Van Long is 30 to 40 minutes from Tam Coc, so base yourself near what you will do most. Two nights is the minimum; three if you add Bai Dinh, Hoa Lu or Van Long.

Tam Coc Village — The Obvious Base, Rightly

Tam Coc is where most visitors stay, and where we did. The main street and the lanes behind it are lined with guesthouses, restaurants, cafés and bike-rental stands. The boats, often rowed with the feet, leave from the centre; Bich Dong Pagoda is a short ride west and the Mua Cave staircase about 2 km north. You can step out for dinner without planning it.

It is no longer a quiet hamlet. The street by the wharf fills with day-trippers from mid-morning and can be noisy in the evening, so sleep a few hundred metres back, in the lanes or on the rice-field side.

Best for: first visits, families, short stays, anyone without a car.

Pros

  • Walk to the boats, restaurants and bike hire
  • The widest choice of rooms at every price, many with pools
  • Short rides to Mua Cave, Bich Dong and Trang An

Cons

  • The main street is busy and touristy by day
  • Rooms on or near the main street can be loud; check the map

Getting around: Tam Coc wharf 1 to 10 minutes on foot from most hotels; Mua Cave 5 minutes by car or about 15 minutes by bike; Trang An about 15 minutes by car; Bai Dinh 25 to 30 minutes.

Where to stay in Tam Coc

  • Budget — Lys Homestay — family-run homestay about 100 m from the boat wharf, from about €30 a night. Family rooms, a pool and a shared kitchen; rated 9.6 on around 1,000 reviews, and the manager speaks French and English.
  • Mid-range — Chez Loan Hotel — where we stayed. Rooms, bungalows, a small pool and a restaurant on the edge of the village, from about €38 a night for a double and about €63 for a family room; breakfast is about €4 extra.
  • Mid-range — Tam Coc Holiday Hotel & Spa — one of the best-reviewed hotels in the village (9.7 on more than 1,800 reviews), from about €95 a night, with family rooms and balconies. Its outdoor pool is closed from November to mid-April.
  • Splurge — Tam Coc Garden Resort — bungalow-style rooms with private terraces over the rice fields in Hai Nham hamlet, about 3 km west of the wharf, with a pool, a jacuzzi and a spa, from about €250 a night. Rated 9.5.

Our stay: we booked Chez Loan for two nights, 11 to 13 November 2019, and paid $117 in total, around €53 a night, for an air-conditioned room with a shower. The hotel is on the edge of the village, a five-minute walk from the wharf and the restaurants but off the main street. Today it lists rooms, bungalows and family rooms for four, a small pool and a restaurant, and scores 8.9 on more than 500 reviews, with guests singling out the location and the staff. It remains the first place we would suggest to a family in the village. If you want Van Long or Bai Dinh as well as the boats and Mua Cave, book a third night.

Trang An and Hoa Lu — Karsts Outside Your Window

North of Tam Coc, the road passes the Trang An boat wharf on its way to Hoa Lu, the 10th-century capital of the Dinh and Early Le dynasties. In villages such as Dai Ang and Ngo Thuong, a newer generation of lodges and small resorts sits against the cliffs, many with pools. It is greener and much quieter than Tam Coc, and closer to Trang An, Hoa Lu and Bai Dinh.

What you lose is the walk to dinner. You will eat at your hotel most nights, and without a bike you depend on Grab or a driver.

Best for: couples, families who want a pool and space, second visits, early starts at Trang An.

Pros

  • Quiet, with karst views from many rooms
  • Closest base to Trang An, Hoa Lu and Bai Dinh
  • Good-value resorts with pools and family bungalows

Cons

  • Few restaurants within walking distance
  • You need a bike, scooter or driver for everything

Getting around: Trang An wharf 5 to 10 minutes by car; Hoa Lu 5 to 10 minutes; Mua Cave about 10 minutes; Tam Coc 15 to 20 minutes; Bai Dinh about 15 minutes.

Ninh Binh City — Only for the Train

Ninh Binh city is the provincial town: railway and bus stations, banks and ordinary Vietnamese life. It was heavily bombed during the American War and rebuilt, so there is little to see and none of the karst scenery. Stay here for one night around an early train or a late arrival, or for a large hotel with an indoor pool in winter.

Best for: train travellers, late arrivals, early departures.

Pros

  • Close to the railway station
  • Cheap, with local food and markets
  • Larger hotels with more facilities

Cons

  • No scenery and few sights
  • Every day out starts with a 15-minute ride

Getting around: Tam Coc about 15 minutes by car; Trang An about 15 to 20 minutes; Hanoi about two hours by train.

Where to stay in Ninh Binh city

  • Mid-range — MOMALI Hotel Ninh Binh — on Ly Thuong Kiet, about 650 m from the station, with family rooms and a restaurant, from about €37 a night; rated 8.4 on more than 400 reviews.
  • Splurge — Ninh Binh Legend Hotel — large hotel on Le Thai To with a spa and indoor and outdoor pools, from about €75 a night; rated 8.3.

Van Long and Kenh Ga — Wetlands and Silence

Van Long is a protected wetland 30 to 40 minutes north-west of Tam Coc: a flooded valley ringed by karsts, crossed in small rowing boats, and known for birds and rare Delacour's langurs on the cliffs. Kenh Ga, a short drive west, is a river village where daily life happens by boat. Both see far fewer visitors than Tam Coc or Trang An.

It is the wrong base for a short first visit: everything else is half an hour away, and there is little beyond your lodge and the village.

Best for: birdwatchers, photographers, slow travellers on a third or fourth night.

Pros

  • The quietest boat trips in the province
  • Close to Bai Dinh and Kenh Ga
  • Good value for space and pools

Cons

  • 30 to 40 minutes from Tam Coc and Trang An
  • Little to do in the evening; fewer places to stay

Getting around: Van Long boat wharf 5 to 15 minutes by car or bike from the lodges below; Bai Dinh about 20 minutes; Tam Coc 30 to 40 minutes.

Where to stay in Van Long

  • Budget — Van Long Family Homestay — in Mai Trung village, with family rooms, bikes and cooking classes, from about €17 a night; rated 9.6 on a smaller number of reviews.
  • Mid-range — Toki Artisan Lodge Vân Long — family rooms with balconies, a year-round pool and free bicycles, from about €60 a night for a double; rated 8.9.
  • Splurge — Emeralda Ninh Binh Resort & Spa — villa-style resort on the edge of the reserve, with a spa, several pools and two restaurants, from about €70 a night with breakfast for the entry-level room; larger and family rooms cost far more. Rated 8.6.

Pu Luong — A Separate Trip, Not a Day Out

Pu Luong is a nature reserve in the hills of Thanh Hoa province, 130 to 150 km from Tam Coc. Its stilt-house villages, terraced rice fields and bamboo water wheels sit in valleys around Thanh Lam and Ba Thuoc, and you come to walk: between villages, along the terraces, up to viewpoints. Lodges are scattered along the valley, many with infinity pools over the fields.

We had booked one night at Pu Luong Eco Garden after Tam Coc, then cancelled it. With three to four hours' drive each way, one night is too short: plan two. Limousine vans run from Tam Coc and Trang An hotels to the lodges, and a private car can stop at Cuc Phuong National Park on the way. There is no bus station or town centre, so confirm the drop-off point with your lodge.

Best for: hikers, families with walking-age kids, anyone who wants rice terraces without the Sapa crowds.

Pros

  • Rice terraces and walks from the door
  • Lodges with pools and views at modest prices
  • Far fewer visitors than Sapa

Cons

  • Three to four hours from Ninh Binh, more from Hanoi
  • Lodges are scattered; restaurants can be a walk away
  • January and February are cold in the mornings, with bare fields

Getting around: on foot between villages; your lodge can arrange guides, motorbike taxis and transfers.

Where to stay in Pu Luong

  • Budget — Inh La Home Pu Luong — in Don village, with an infinity pool, a restaurant and family rooms, from about €40 a night; rated 9.1 on more than 650 reviews.
  • Mid-range — Puluong Luna Resort — in Leo village, with an infinity pool, a spa and family rooms, from about €55 a night. Rated 9.1; guests note other restaurants are a 10 to 15 minute walk.
  • Mid-range — Pu Luong Eco Garden — the lodge we had booked and cancelled, in Bang village, with a pool, a spa and family rooms with terraces, from about €78 a night. Rated 9.4.
  • Splurge — Puluong Retreat — in Don village, with an infinity pool facing the rice terraces, from about €110 a night; rated 8.8.

What It Costs, and When to Book

Prices checked October 2026, for a double room on a weekday in November:

  • Budget: €15 to €40 a night for well-rated homestays and small hotels, many with family rooms and a pool.
  • Mid-range: €40 to €100 for boutique hotels and lodges.
  • Splurge: €130 to €250 for the top resorts around Tam Coc and Trang An; Pu Luong tops out lower, at around €110 to €140.

Weekends matter more than seasons. The Goat Boutique Resort cost about €48 on a Wednesday in November and about €98 on the Saturday of the same week; Lys Homestay, in Tam Coc village, charged the same on both nights. National holidays (30 April to 1 May, 2 September) and Tet, on 6 February 2027, are the busiest times, and family-run places may close for Tet.

March to May and September to November are the most comfortable months, and the rice around Tam Coc turns golden in late May and early June. June to August is hot and humid, with heavy showers. December to February is cool and often grey, and some outdoor pools close: Tam Coc Holiday's is shut from November to mid-April. In Pu Luong, the terraces are green in March and April and golden in late September and early October.

A couple of weeks ahead is usually enough outside weekends and holidays. Most small hotels offer free cancellation; some charge a few euros for breakfast, and some show prices before 8% VAT, so check the total.

For families, family rooms are common and cheap, often with two double beds, and cots are often available on request. For a kitchen, Lys Homestay and Trang An Retreat have shared ones.

Where This Fits in the Trip

Ninh Binh slots naturally between two stays in Hanoi, which is what we did: a night in the capital on arrival, two nights in Tam Coc, then back to Hanoi. With more time, it is also the natural first stop on a loop west to Pu Luong. See our things to do in Hanoi for the capital, and our 31 things to do in Vietnam for the bigger picture.
