Papingo Rock Pools โ The Complete Guide (Kolymbithres, Zagori)
Tucked 850 metres up in the mountains of Zagori, behind the stone village of Mikro Papingo, is a short stream carved over thousands of years into a staircase of polished white schist pools. The locals call them the Kolymbithres (swimming pools). They are the most photographed natural feature in the whole Zagori region and, for a brief window in July and August, the best cold-water swimming spot in Northern Greece.
Here is what we learned visiting in April.

What They Are

The Kolymbithres are a chain of three main natural bowls, each two to three metres deep, carved by a small stream falling through limestone and schist beds at the foot of the Astraka towers. The rock around the pools is polished to a soft white by thousands of years of water flow. The water itself is spring-fed and extremely cold all year โ barely 7ยฐC in April, and perhaps 12-14ยฐC at the summer peak.
The pools sit at the bottom of a short valley between Mikro Papingo and the cliffs that rise above it. From above, on a drone, the whole feature looks like a small marble staircase.
How to Get There
The walk starts in the main square of Mikro Papingo, the higher and smaller of the two Papingo villages. Park in the free village car park just below the square. Follow the sign for "Kolymbithres" (or "Rogovo" โ the stream name) out of the square on a small cobblestone path next to a chapel. The path immediately drops on stone steps into oak forest.
- Distance: 900 m one way. - Elevation: 80 m descent to the first pool. - Walking time: 20-25 min down, 30-35 min back. - Difficulty: Easy-moderate. The descent is on rough rocks; the return climb is the hardest part. - Fit for kids: Yes, from about age 7. - Footwear: Trail shoes ideal. Trainers are fine in dry weather; flip-flops will fail on the rocky steps.
The three pools are spaced roughly 80-120 metres apart along the stream bed. The first is the easiest to reach but also the busiest. The second is the one most often photographed. The third โ the largest and deepest โ is another 80 m further up-stream and requires a small rock scramble that puts most casual walkers off.
Book the Zagori jeep tour from Ioannina (no car needed)

The Kolymbithres of Papingo are tucked deep in the Vikos National Park โ fly into Thessaloniki (SKG), allow 3.5 hours by car, and base yourself in one of the Zagori stone villages for at least two nights. The pools dry out late in summer; we go in May or September when the snowmelt is still feeding them.
Whether to Swim

This is the question most visitors ask. Here is our honest answer:
- April: Do not plan to swim. The water is 7-8ยฐC and the air is barely above 15ยฐC. One of us waded in up to mid-thigh and came out shivering. Bring a swimsuit anyway โ feet in is a small reward after the walk. - May-June: The brave swim. Water is still cold (10-14ยฐC) but the ambient air is warmer. - July-August: The pools are genuinely popular for swimming. Water is around 13-16ยฐC. Locals jump from the rocks. - September-October: Brave swimmers only, but the light is beautiful.
The pools are spring-fed and never warm significantly, even in summer. If you expect Mediterranean sea temperatures you will be disappointed.
Best Sit Spots

The pools are not just for swimming. Even without dipping in, the stones around them are flat, warm in the sun, and pleasant to spend an hour on. Three of our favourite vantage points:
1. The flat slab above the first pool โ big enough for four people, gets the sun from 11:00 to 15:00. 2. The small balcony above the second pool โ three metres above the water, perfect for photographs of people looking down. 3. The upper shelf above the third pool โ requires the small scramble but rewards with the best view up-valley towards the Astraka towers.
If you bring a snack, pick the second spot. A thermos of tea and a piece of tiropita from the Mikro Papingo bakery makes for a very good 30 minutes.
When to Go During the Day
Two windows are better than the rest:
- 09:00-10:30 โ first visitors after the local guesthouses' breakfasts. Quiet, morning light. - 15:30-17:00 โ afternoon light catches the white rocks; most day-trippers have already walked back out.
The middle of the day, roughly 12:00-14:30, is both the busiest (small tour groups from Ioannina arrive) and the harshest-lit for photographs.

Is It Worth Staying Overnight in Papingo?

For this single walk alone โ probably not, if you are already based in Monodendri an hour away. For the combination of Papingo village, the Kolymbithres, and the views from Megalo Papingo, yes โ one or two nights in a Papingo guesthouse is one of the finest experiences in Northern Greece.
We stayed in Megalo Papingo (the larger, lower twin village) for two nights at a small family-run guesthouse. The evening in Papingo is the real payoff: temperatures drop, stars emerge, no cars, and a wood-smoke scent in the air from the guesthouses' dinner ovens.

Safety Notes
- The stones around the pools can be extremely slippery, especially after rain. Wet white schist is as slick as ice. Take it slow. - The pools are deep in the middle (2-3 m) but the edges can be shallow and rocky. If you jump, look at the water first and pick a spot only locals are already using. - The walk back up the return climb catches many older visitors off-guard. Budget twice the descent time.
Combining With Other Zagori Stops
The Kolymbithres are worth half a day. We would combine them with: โ Northern Greece 11-day road trip itinerary
- A late-morning start at the Beloi viewpoint (40 min drive from Vradeto, 1.5h walk) โ see it early, then drive to Papingo for the pools at midday. - A late-afternoon at the pools followed by an evening in Megalo Papingo (contrabass story optional โ see our Zagori complete guide). - Driving the full switchback road from Mikro Papingo up to the Astraka refuge trail-head โ not for everyone, but photographers will want the extra elevation.
