Vikos Gorge โ The Deepest Gorge in Europe (Zagori)
Between the two rims of the Zagori plateau โ Monodendri on the south rim, Vikos village on the north rim โ the ground drops away into a canyon of limestone and oak forest that, at its deepest, is 1,100 metres from rim to river. A Guinness World Record lists it as the deepest gorge on earth by the ratio of width to depth; at several points along its length the rims are only 900 m apart above a river a kilometre below.
You can see the Vikos Gorge from six excellent viewpoints along the rim, walk its length in one hard but beautiful day, or fly a drone through it if you stay on the right side of the regulations. This is the practical guide we would write to our past selves.

The Quick Facts
- Length: 20 km. - Maximum depth: 1,100 m. - Minimum width at top: 900 m. - River at the bottom: the Voidomatis โ one of the clearest rivers in Europe. - Highest rim viewpoint: Beloi, at 1,350 m altitude. - Best drone angle: from the Oxia viewpoint south of Monodendri, facing north.
The Six Rim Viewpoints (Ranked)

1. Beloi (from Vradeto)
The best single view, full stop. A 20-minute walk from Vradeto village brings you to an exposed rock platform with a clear view down the main axis of the gorge. On a clear day you see the opposite rim, the Astraka towers on the horizon, and Papingo as a grey smudge below them. See our Zagori hiking guide for trail details.
2. Oxia (south of Monodendri)
A 20-min drive east-then-south from Monodendri on a small paved road leads to Oxia, a rocky promontory with 270ยฐ views into the gorge. Oxia is the preferred viewpoint for drone flights because the drop is sheer and the opposite rim is at eye level. Best light is 17:00-19:00 in April.
3. Agia Paraskevi (from Monodendri)
A 15-minute paved walk from Monodendri village. The little 15th-century monastery is built on a narrow ledge directly above the gorge wall. Entry is free. The monastery itself is locked outside of Sunday services, but the terrace is always accessible.
4. Vikos Village Viewpoint
Less dramatic than Oxia or Beloi, but with a different angle. The viewpoint is at the end of Vikos village on the north rim, past the last house, at a small signed turn-off. From here you see the entire length of the gorge south-east towards Monodendri.
5. The Papingo Viewpoint (from Mikro Papingo)
A short walk above Mikro Papingo leads to a secondary rim, 900 m above the Voidomatis. Less iconic than the other five but combined with a visit to the Rock Pools, it rounds out a Papingo day.
6. The Bridge of Kokkori
Not exactly a "viewpoint" of the gorge itself, but the stone bridge at Kokkori spans a small tributary that drops into the Voidomatis 5 km downstream. It is the scale model of the gorge โ worth a stop.

Should You Walk the Full Traverse?

The full traverse of the Vikos Gorge โ from Monodendri at the south rim to Vikos village on the north rim, via the bottom of the canyon โ is 14 km, 6-7 hours, with a 900 m descent and a 600 m climb. It is one of the classic hikes of Greece.
The trail is well-waymarked, the descent from Monodendri is on a restored Ottoman-era monopati (mule track) with stone steps, and the bottom of the canyon runs along the Voidomatis river through a forest of plane trees.
It is not easy, despite being often described as a "family hike" in older guidebooks. The descent is knee-punishing and the climb up the north wall at the end is where most walkers hit the wall. Budget two litres of water per person, bring real hiking shoes, and start before mid-morning to give yourself time buffer.
Who should do it: fit walkers who have hiked at least 20 km days in the past year. Who should not: casual walkers, families with kids under 12, anyone with knee issues.
If you want a taste of the gorge without the full commitment, walk the first hour of the descent from Monodendri and turn around. The stone steps and the initial views are beautiful.

Drone Flights

The Vikos Gorge is one of the most rewarding drone sites in Greece. A DJI Mavic Pro 2 handles the wind well enough from any of the six rim viewpoints. A few notes from my own flights there in April 2026:
- Fly from the rim, never from the bottom. Line-of-sight is everything and the walls are tall. - Keep the battery buffer healthy. The gorge winds are swirly and a headwind on return can add 30% to the power draw. - The most useful angle is from Oxia facing north, late afternoon โ warm light on the south wall, shadow falling into the canyon below. - Respect the airspace near the village of Vikos. Locals walk the rim in the early evening and drone noise carries.
I learned a lesson about battery buffer the hard way on a separate shoot near Ypapanti at Meteora. Since then, hard rule: return to home at 30% battery, regardless of how good the light is.
When to Go
- April-May: greenest, wildflowers on the rim, some snow still on the Astraka towers in the background. Cool in the mornings. - June-July: the trails are ideal but the days are hot at lower elevation. - September-October: the other sweet spot. Cool air, golden light, still-open tavernas. - November-March: snow closes the Papingo and Vradeto roads intermittently. The rim viewpoints can still be reached from Monodendri.

Getting there
Vikos Gorge is in the Pindus mountains of Epirus โ three and a half hours by car from Thessaloniki airport (SKG). SKG has the widest range of direct European flights; Ioannina (IOA) is closer but only really works if you're flying via Athens.
Where to Stay
For gorge viewpoints: Monodendri is the best single base. For the full traverse: sleep in Monodendri the night before and arrange a taxi transfer back from Vikos village at the end (about 35โฌ one-way, pre-booked). For Beloi and the upper trails: Tsepelovo or Vradeto.

Organised Trips
Local operators run a handful of Vikos excursions from Ioannina: viewpoint-hopping minivan tours, guided gorge traverses, rafting the Voidomatis river that emerges from the gorge's lower end. Rafting in particular is an excellent shoulder-season activity โ the water is glacial but clear and the rapids are mild.

Making Connections
If deep canyons with trail access are your thing, our guides to the Canyon of Verdon in Provence and to the Colca Canyon in Peru cover the same category in very different climates.
FAQ
Is it really the deepest gorge on earth? By the ratio of width to depth at several pinch points, yes. By absolute depth, no โ there are deeper canyons elsewhere.
Is there an entry fee? No. All rim viewpoints are free.
Can I swim in the Voidomatis? At the bottom of the gorge where the river emerges, yes โ but the water is very cold, 7-10ยฐC in April.
How dangerous is the rim? The viewpoints are safer than they look, but none have railings. Stay three metres from any edge.
Can kids walk the gorge? Not the full traverse. They can walk the first hour of the descent from Monodendri and handle Agia Paraskevi and Beloi (with adult supervision at the edge).
