Where to Stay for Bromo and Ijen: Rim, Malang, Licin or Banyuwangi
Sleep on or just below the Bromo rim for the sunrise, in Licin for Ijen, and put a rest night between the two: the seven-hour drive and two 2 am starts are what break people, not the volcanoes.
Bromo and Ijen look like neighbours on a map of Java. They are seven hours apart by road, and both are at their best in the small hours. So the accommodation question is a sleep question: where to put your beds so two 2 am alarms don't land on consecutive nights, and how close to each volcano you need to be when they go off.

We did this route in August 2019 with our two children, then six and ten, and friend-families: one night in Malang, one on the Bromo road, one outside Banyuwangi before Ijen. We picked the right places but got the rhythm wrong, and that's what this page is about.
The Short Answer
| Best for | Area | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-time visitors | Cemoro Lawang & Ngadisari | ARTOTEL Cabin Bromo | Insulated cabins at the caldera entrance |
| Families at Bromo | Bromo road, Sukapura | Gubuk Ndeso Bromo | We stayed: family rooms, jeep pickup, low price |
| Families at Ijen | Licin | Sawah Ijen | Family rooms with kitchenettes, a pool, short night drive |
| Couples and a splurge | Tosari | Plataran Bromo | The best-rated hotel around the caldera |
| Budget, no car | Probolinggo | Moshi Moshi | Railway town, minibus up, tours sold in-house |
| First night off the plane | Malang | INNI Homestay | We stayed: quiet, cheap, exceptionally rated |
| Ferry to Bali | Banyuwangi town | Juda Homestay | Near the station, breakfast waiting after the hike |
Where we stayed: INNI Homestay in Malang and Gubuk Ndeso Bromo, one night each. Our Ijen booking, a guesthouse in Licin, was cancelled at the last minute, so we slept at a family homestay outside Banyuwangi that we found after an hour of phone calls.
How Bromo and Ijen Are Laid Out
Mount Bromo is a smoking cone inside the Tengger caldera, ringed by cliffs and a plain of volcanic ash, the Sea of Sand. The Probolinggo road climbs from the north-east through Sukapura and Ngadisari to Cemoro Lawang, on the rim at about 2,200 metres. The Pasuruan road climbs from the north-west through Tosari and Wonokitri, and a jeep track comes up from Malang. Sunrise is watched from Penanjakan or King Kong Hill, then the jeeps drop into the caldera for the crater.
Kawah Ijen is at Java's eastern tip. Every climb starts at the Paltuding ranger post, which you reach from Banyuwangi through Licin to the east, or from Bondowoso through Sempol to the west.

Most people fly into Surabaya: Malang is about two and a half hours away by car. Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang is 45 kilometres of mountain road, 90 minutes to two hours. Cemoro Lawang to Banyuwangi is about 315 kilometres, roughly seven hours; the train from Probolinggo takes four to six. Banyuwangi has an airport, and the ferry from Ketapang to Gilimanuk on Bali takes under an hour.
Plan four nights, five if you can. We did it in three, and the hardest part was the alarms, not the hiking: sunrise, the drive east and the Ijen climb fell within about 24 hours. Add a night between the volcanoes.
The other thing people underestimate is the cold: single figures at the rim before dawn, even in August, and modest rooms have no heating. Both parks now run on online tickets and daily quotas. Bromo costs Rp 255,000 per foreign visitor a day, bought on the park website. Ijen tickets are bought online through the AyoKeTamanNasional platform and can't be cancelled or changed. You also need a health certificate issued within three days of the climb. Ijen shut from 4 to 28 September 2026 because of wildfires, and closes one day a month for a clean-up programme (6 November and 4 December in 2026).
Malang — Soft Landing, Long Drive
Malang is a hilly university city south of Surabaya airport. It isn't near Bromo; it's where you sleep to split the road journey. We drove in near midnight. The streets were lined with lit-up papan bunga, the tall floral boards Indonesians send to weddings, each wishing a couple we would never meet a "Happy Wedding". It told us, gently, that we were not on Bali.
It suits arrivals, and anyone who wants a proper hotel before two nights of thin walls. It doesn't work as a sunrise base: from here, a Bromo sunrise means leaving in the middle of the night.
Best for: your first night after a long-haul flight.
Pros
- Real hotels and restaurants at city prices
- Far warmer at night than the caldera rim
- Drivers for the Bromo leg are easy to arrange through your host
Cons
- Several hours by road from Cemoro Lawang
- Nothing here you need to see on a short trip
Getting around: Surabaya airport is about two and a half hours by car (a private driver runs about €25–35 one way). Trains run from Surabaya Gubeng and are cheap but awkward with bags and tired kids.
Where to stay in Malang
- Budget — INNI Homestay — B&B in the Araya residential area, from about €15–22 a night. We stayed here; rated 9.7 from nearly 800 reviews, with family rooms.
- Mid-range — Grand Mercure Malang Mirama — five-star hotel with an infinity pool and mountain-view rooms, from about €40–55.
- Splurge — Hotel Tugu Malang — colonial-era style, outdoor pool and spa, five minutes' walk from the station, from about €80.
Our stay: we paid around €30 for one night in August 2019. INNI is a quiet guesthouse on a residential street, exactly what a first night needs. We ate the cheapest nasi goreng of the trip at a roadside warung nearby and the children were asleep by 9 pm. Our Bromo driver came through the homestay, which was cheaper but tied us to one operator. We would book INNI again without hesitation and arrange the driver before landing.

Cemoro Lawang and Ngadisari — Sunrise at the Door
Cemoro Lawang is the village on the caldera rim, and Ngadisari runs below it. Below Ngadisari, the main Bromo road drops through Wonotoro and Sapikerep towards Sukapura. Sleep anywhere along that line and the sunrise jeep picks you up at your guesthouse, which at 3 am matters more than anything. Guesthouses all work with the jeep co-operative; tell them the night before. Jeeps are priced per vehicle, commonly quoted at Rp 700,000–900,000 booked direct, so they are cheap for a family.
It is a farming village, not a resort, and rooms are simple for the price. By 9 am the sunrise, the horse ride across the Sea of Sand and the crater stairs are behind you. A second night gives you the afternoon to rest.
Best for: first-timers and families who want the shortest possible night.
Pros
- Jeep pickup at the door, no pre-dawn drive up the mountain
- From the rim hotels you can walk to the caldera edge for viewpoints
- Cheap family rooms on the road below the rim
Cons
- Cold at night; our room had no heating, so check before you book
- Basic rooms, few restaurants, grey dust everywhere
- Rim beds sell out in July and August
Getting around: Probolinggo is 90 minutes to two hours down the mountain. The jeep does the whole sunrise loop; from the Sea of Sand drop-off it's about 30 minutes on foot to the crater stairs, or 15 on horseback.
Where to stay around Cemoro Lawang
- Budget — Cafe Lava Hostel — private rooms with bathrooms in Cemoro Lawang, from about €22. Guests note it is right at the park entrance; it was full on both dates we tested.
- Budget — Gubuk Ndeso Bromo — homestay on the Bromo road at Sapikerep, from about €20–30 for a double, more for family rooms and the apartment with a kitchen. We stayed here.
- Mid-range — ARTOTEL Cabin Bromo — cabins in Ngadisari, from about €54. Guests say they walk to a sunrise viewpoint instead of taking the jeep.
- Upper mid-range — Jiwa Jawa Resort Bromo — the most polished option on the Probolinggo side, at Wonotoro, with family rooms and a restaurant, from about €110.
Our stay: Gubuk Ndeso cost us around €30 for the night in August 2019. Wooden walls, thick blankets and a thermos of hot water waiting on arrival. There was no heating, so we slept in our base layers, and the kids loved it anyway. The wake-up call came at 2:30, someone was making coffee in the kitchen, and the Land Cruisers were idling in the lane by three. It sits lower than the rim villages, and guests today put it at about 40 minutes from Bromo. We would book it again, for two nights, so the morning after sunrise isn't also a travel day. Our Bromo sunrise with kids guide covers the morning itself.

Tosari and Wonokitri — The Quieter West Side
On the Pasuruan side of the massif, Tosari and Wonokitri are Tenggerese farming villages on steep vegetable terraces. The road climbs from the Wonokitri gate to the Dingklik junction below the Penanjakan viewpoints, and jeeps from this side do the same sunrise-and-crater loop. You come here for better hotels and fewer backpackers. The drawback is depending on one gate: a guest at Jambuluwuk reported a fire closing the gate nearby and forcing a long detour.
Best for: couples and anyone who wants comfort around the sunrise.
Pros
- The best-rated hotels around the caldera
- Quieter villages, fewer tour groups
Cons
- You depend on one gate; when it closes, the detour is long
- Few independent restaurants
- A longer road east towards Ijen
Getting around: your hotel books the jeep to Penanjakan and the Sea of Sand.
Where to stay in Tosari and Wonokitri
- Mid-range — Hotel Lereng Bromo — Wonokitri hotel with an outdoor pool and sauna, from about €57.
- Mid-range — Jambuluwuk Bromo Resort — modern resort with an indoor pool and family suites, from about €68.
- Splurge — Plataran Bromo — hilltop resort at Ngadiwono with a kids' club, rated 9.3, from about €215 in February and €420 in July.
Probolinggo — Cheap Beds, Long Night
Probolinggo is a lowland town on the north coast, on the railway between Surabaya and Banyuwangi. Minibuses leave here for Cemoro Lawang. It is warmer and cheaper, with more restaurants than the rim; the catch is a 90-minute drive up in the dark.
Best for: backpackers and anyone travelling by train.
Pros
- Station for trains to Surabaya and Banyuwangi
- Very cheap rooms, many sold with Bromo tours
- Warm nights
Cons
- An extra 90 minutes or more each way on sunrise morning
- A transit town with nothing to keep you
Getting around: the shared minibus to Cemoro Lawang costs about Rp 50,000–75,000 a person. The train to Banyuwangi takes four to six hours.
Where to stay in Probolinggo
- Budget — Moshi Moshi — guesthouse with private and shared-bathroom rooms, from about €9. Guests book Bromo tours here.
- Budget — Bromo Venture — simple rooms with a shared kitchen, from about €10.
Banyuwangi Town — Ferry, Food, Longer Night
Banyuwangi is the port town at Java's eastern tip. It has the airport, the trains, the Ketapang ferry to Bali and plenty of restaurants. The Paltuding trailhead is about 90 minutes away, which means a 1 am start for the 2 am gate.
This is where we ended up after our Licin booking was cancelled: a family homestay outside town, with a garden archway of yellow flowers and a bamboo pavilion over a lily pond that the kids claimed at once. The host made us nasi goreng, let us nap in our clothes and woke us at 2:30 without complaint. On four hours' sleep, the person running the place matters more than the room.
Best for: combining Ijen with the ferry to Bali, and travellers without a car.
Pros
- Restaurants, ATMs, trains, airport and ferry in one place
- Easy to book Ijen tours with pickup
- Real hotels if you want a pool after the climb
Cons
- The longest drive to the trailhead
- Hot and humid at sea level
Getting around: about 90 minutes to Paltuding; the ferry from Ketapang to Gilimanuk takes under an hour once you are aboard.
Where to stay in Banyuwangi
- Budget — Juda Homestay — garden homestay in Glagah near the station, rated 9.4, from about €14. Guests mention breakfast ready when they came back from Ijen.
- Mid-range — Kokoon Hotel Banyuwangi — rated 9.3, family rooms with sea or mountain views, on the Jember road south of town, from about €53.
- Splurge — Dialoog Banyuwangi — beachfront hotel with a pool and spa, from about €104.

Licin and the Ijen Foothills — Half the Drive
Licin is the district on the slopes west of Banyuwangi: rice fields, coffee, cooler air. The road to Paltuding runs through it, roughly halving the night drive. If you have the choice, sleep here before Ijen, as we had planned to.
Be clear-eyed about the volcano. At the rim, the sulphur fumes were too much for our six-year-old. His mask didn't seal, and I carried him down coughing. We would not take a child under ten up there again. Read our Kawah Ijen with kids story before you book anything here.
Best for: anyone climbing Ijen, and families who want a pool and space the day after.
Pros
- The shortest drive to Paltuding from the Banyuwangi side
- Cooler nights, rice-field views, family rooms with pools
- Hosts arrange the Ijen transport and guide
Cons
- Few restaurants beyond your hotel
- You need a driver or tour to get anywhere
- The ferry means going back through town
Getting around: roughly half the night drive to Paltuding compared with town; Banyuwangi airport is about 22 kilometres from Sawah Ijen.
Where to stay in Licin
- Budget — Sawah Ijen — family rooms with kitchenettes and terraces, outdoor pool, rated 9.0, from about €18. It was full in July when we checked, so book early.
- Mid-range — Purwa Ijen — bungalows with hill or garden views and family rooms, rated 9.2, from about €28.
- Mid-range — Teras Hotel Ijen Banyuwangi — infinity pool beside the rice paddies, from about €56.
- Couples — Lintang Luku Tent Resort Ijen — adults-only air-conditioned tents, rated 9.5, from about €95.

Bondowoso and Sempol — Plantation Side, Thin Choice
West of the Ijen plateau, Sempol and Blawan are coffee-plantation villages, the closest to Paltuding from the Bromo side. Sleeping among the coffee sounds ideal; in practice, little here can be booked with confidence. The Catimor plantation homestay at Blawan now lists on Booking.com as Catimor Heritage 1894, with two reviews averaging 4 out of 10; we would not book it on that. Bondowoso town has decent hotels but is a long drive from the trailhead.
Best for: drivers coming from Bromo who will not go on to Bali.
Pros
- Closest villages to the trailhead from the west
- Breaks up the drive from Bromo
Cons
- Very few well-reviewed, bookable rooms
- No onward ferry; Bali means crossing to Banyuwangi anyway
Getting around: you need your own driver.
Where to stay on the Bondowoso side
- Mid-range — Grand Padis Hotel — town hotel with family rooms, rated 8.3, from about €30.
What It Costs, and When to Book
Homestays and guesthouses run €10–30 a night. Comfortable mid-range hotels with pools cost €40–70. The top tier is small: Dialoog and Jiwa Jawa sit around €100–120, and Plataran Bromo runs from about €215 in February to over €400 in July. Prices checked October 2026.
The dry season, roughly May to October, gives the clearest sunrises. July and August are busiest; on our July test dates several rim properties and Sawah Ijen were already full. Indonesian long weekends and Eid fill the parks too (Bromo added 1,000 daily places for Lebaran 2026). For July and August, book the rim and Licin two to three months ahead. Keep room bookings refundable and buy park tickets once your dates are fixed, because the Ijen tickets can't be refunded.
For families: family rooms are easy to find (Gubuk Ndeso, Jiwa Jawa, Sawah Ijen and Purwa Ijen all list them), but heating is not. Pack hats, gloves, fleeces, a buff for the dust and a head torch each, and snacks for the jeep: breakfast comes after the sunrise loop.
Where This Fits in the Trip
Bromo and Ijen were the first four days of our 17-day Bali and Java family itinerary. We landed in Surabaya and drove east, Malang to Bromo to Ijen, then took the Ketapang ferry to Bali and on to Amed. The sequence works; it just needs one more night between the volcanoes.
Deciding whether to do both? Read the Bromo sunrise with kids guide and our honest take on Kawah Ijen with children side by side. With young children, Bromo is a yes; Ijen is a much harder call.

FAQ
Should I stay in Cemoro Lawang or Probolinggo for Mount Bromo? Cemoro Lawang or the villages just below it on the Bromo road. The jeeps collect you at the door around 3 am. Probolinggo is warmer and cheaper but adds a 90-minute drive up in the dark.
How many nights do I need for Bromo and Ijen? Four is comfortable: a night in Malang or Probolinggo, one or two near the Bromo rim, then two near Ijen so the long drive and the 2 am start do not fall on the same day.
Where is the best place to stay for Kawah Ijen? Licin, on the slopes west of Banyuwangi, roughly halves the night drive to the Paltuding trailhead. Banyuwangi town has more restaurants and is the better base if you are catching the ferry to Bali.
What do I need to book in advance in 2026? Both parks sell tickets online and set daily quotas. Kawah Ijen tickets are non-refundable, and you need a health certificate issued no more than three days before your climb. Check for closures: Ijen was shut from 4 to 28 September 2026 because of wildfires.
Are Bromo and Ijen suitable for young children? Bromo worked for our six-year-old with warm layers and a horse across the Sea of Sand. Ijen did not: the sulphur fumes at the rim were too much for him, and we would not take a child under ten up there again.
Pierrick Jean stayed near Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen in August 2019 with his family. Prices and availability checked October 2026. More about how we write our guides.
