Where to Stay on Île d'Yeu: Port-Joinville, Saint-Sauveur or the Coast
Île d'Yeu is a rental-house island with only a handful of hotels. Stay in or near Port-Joinville for the ferry, market and bike shops; choose Saint-Sauveur, Ker Chalon or Les Vieilles for quiet and a beach, and book summer months ahead.
Île d'Yeu has no bridge, no airport and hardly any hotels. You arrive by boat, hire bikes on the quay and sleep in a house: a whitewashed cottage with coloured shutters, let Saturday to Saturday, sheets in your suitcase. The real question is which part of the island your rental should be in, and on an island ten kilometres long, how much that matters.

We have rented a whole house near Port-Joinville three times, a week each: July 2015, July 2021 as a family of four, and August 2024. Three houses, three price points, all within cycling distance of the harbour.
The trade-off is simple. Port-Joinville puts the ferry, fish market, bike shops and bakeries on your doorstep, with summer bustle. The villages and beach hamlets give you quiet and sand on foot, with a bike ride for everything else.

How Île d'Yeu Is Laid Out
The island is about 10 kilometres by 4, some 17 kilometres off the Vendée coast. The north and east are the gentle side: sandy beaches and Port-Joinville, the only town and the ferry port. The south and west are the Côte Sauvage: granite cliffs, coves, the ruined Vieux-Château and the tiny harbour of Port de la Meule.

Inland, Saint-Sauveur is the only real village. The rest is a scatter of hamlets whose names mostly start with "Ker": Ker Chalon behind the beaches east of the port, Ker Bossy and Ker Pissot in the middle, La Croix above Plage des Vieilles in the south-east.
Getting there. Yeu Continent runs fast boats from Fromentine all year (about 30 minutes) and the cargo ship Insula Oya III (70 minutes), the only way to bring a car. Compagnie Vendéenne adds seasonal foot-passenger boats: about 45 minutes from Fromentine, an hour from Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, 75 minutes from Barbâtre on Noirmoutier. Fromentine is roughly an hour and a half by car from Nantes.
Getting around. By bike. From Port-Joinville: Saint-Sauveur 10–15 minutes, Port de la Meule about 15, the Vieux-Château about 20, Les Vieilles 20–25. The island is flat, its highest point barely 30 metres. Hire shops line the quay; expect around €10 a day for a basic bike, €25–30 for an electric one. There is also a small island bus network.
The constraint people miss: everything crosses on a boat. Yeu Continent takes two container bags per passenger (23 kg each) plus one small cabin bag. Your own bike costs €29.80 return booked more than a month ahead (€46.40 electric), must be reserved, and only Yeu Continent carries it. A 4–4.5 m car costs €688.30 return. And the free Yeu Continent car park at Fromentine is for day-trippers only from 3 July to 30 August, so a summer week means paid parking with a shuttle.
How long. Three or four nights covers the beaches, the cliffs and a lap of the island. We have always taken a week, which is how most houses let in summer.
Port-Joinville — Easy Base, Busier Streets
Every visit starts and ends on the quay here: colourful façades, small restaurants, a green lighthouse on the jetty, and in the morning the boats unloading crab, lobster and langoustines for the fish market. Langoustines were the star during our visits, bought on the harbour, cooked at the house, eaten with local bread and a bottle of rosé.

Most rentals cluster here, including all three of ours. It suits first-timers, anyone without a car, and families who want bakery, market and bike shop on foot. It is not the place for silence in August: the quays fill when the boats come in. The edges of town are the compromise, with Plage de Saint-Aubin and Plage de la Borgne a few minutes' walk from the centre.
Best for: first-time visitors, families, travellers without bikes or a car.
Pros
- Ferry, luggage containers, bike hire and market on foot
- Most of the island's restaurants and shops
- Town beaches a few minutes' walk away
- The widest choice of rentals
Cons
- Busiest part of the island in July and August
- Houses right on the port cost the most
- Furthest point from the Côte Sauvage
Getting around: Saint-Sauveur 10–15 minutes by bike, Port de la Meule about 15, Vieux-Château about 20, Les Vieilles 20–25.
Where to stay in Port-Joinville
- Budget — Citad' Yeu — one-bedroom apartment with garden, from about €105 a night outside summer, roughly €900 for a July week. Full kitchen and washing machine; guests rate it 8.8.
- Mid-range — Atlantic Hôtel — small hotel on Quai Carnot, from about €80 a night outside summer. Harbour views, family rooms, nothing to carry beyond the quay.
- Mid-range — Hôtel L'Escale — hotel with a garden near the ferry, about €150 a night for two in late October 2026. Rated 8.9; Plage de Saint-Aubin is four minutes' walk.
- Splurge — Escale avec vue mer sur les quais — four-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment on Quai Carnot with a sea-view balcony, roughly €1,940 for a July week. For two families sharing.
- Our 2024 house — Maison résidentiel, jardin, proche port — two-bedroom terraced house with a garden, about 1.6 km from the port and 400 m from the sea. We stayed here in August 2024.
Our stay: our three rentals map Port-Joinville prices. In July 2015 we paid about €115 a night for a detached house near the port owned by a local school association. In July 2021, as a family of four, about €215 a night for a freshly renovated house right at the port. In August 2024, about €125 a night for the house above, in a quiet residence on the edge of town, with a €500 deposit, a choice of cleaning it ourselves or paying €90, and no sheets supplied. The 2015 and 2021 listings have since been removed from Airbnb. The numbers make the point: a house on the quay costs close to double one a short ride out, and on an island this flat the ride is no hardship. The 2024 house is still listed, with a cot, a high chair and bike parking.
Eat nearby: the fish market on the harbour, for whatever came in that morning.
Our Île d'Yeu travel guide covers ferries, budgets and when to go.
Saint-Sauveur — The Village in the Middle
Saint-Sauveur is the island's only inland village: a white church with a square bell tower, low houses with blue and yellow shutters, little traffic. It sits between Port-Joinville and the south coast, the most central base on the island and the calmest one with shops.
It suits people who want a village rather than a port, and who would rather cycle to the harbour than hear it at night. It is not a beach base: the nearest sand is a ride away.
Best for: couples, families with bikes, anyone who wants the centre.
Pros
- Calm, with a real village feel
- Both coasts within about 10 minutes by bike
- The hotel with the most facilities on the island
Cons
- No beach on foot
- Fewer restaurants than the port
- Arrival day means a ride or a taxi with luggage
Getting around: Port-Joinville 10–15 minutes by bike, Port de la Meule, Plage des Vieilles and Plage de Ker Châlon each about 8–10.
Where to stay in Saint-Sauveur
- Mid-range — Holiday Home by Interhome — two-bedroom house with a kitchenette, roughly €2,085 for a July week. Agency-managed, with only one review so far.
- Splurge — La Mission Hôtel & Spa — 22-room hotel with an indoor pool, seasonal outdoor pool, sauna and hammam, about €310 a night for two in late October 2026. Rated 9.5, with large gardens and a children's play area: the island's best hotel for families who want a pool.
Port de la Meule and the South Coast — Wild Side, Long Ride Back
Port de la Meule is a tiny natural harbour in a rocky cove, fishing boats in turquoise water below granite cliffs. From here the coastal path runs west past the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Nouvelle to the Vieux-Château and the Pointe de la Tranche, about 5 kilometres of cliff top. Sleeping nearby means walking out for the evening light without cycling home in the dark.

There is almost nothing to stay in at the harbour itself; the rentals that work are a little inland, between Saint-Sauveur and the coast. This is the base for walkers and photographers, and the wrong one for anyone wanting a café downstairs or sand on foot. The cliffs have no barriers, which matters with small children.
Best for: walkers, photographers, couples who want the wild side.
Pros
- Cliff path and sunsets on your doorstep
- The quietest part of the island
- Seasonal café at the harbour
Cons
- Few properties
- Furthest from the ferry and shops
- Unprotected cliff edges
Getting around: Port-Joinville about 15 minutes by bike, Saint-Sauveur about 10, the Vieux-Château about 10 by bike or 45 on foot along the path.
Where to stay near Port de la Meule
- Budget — Les 3 Galets — two-bedroom holiday home with a kitchenette, washing machine and bike parking, a 17-minute walk from the harbour; from about €98 a night in early summer, roughly €800 for a July week. Two-night minimum.
- Mid-range — Gîte familial à L'Île-d'Yeu — three-bedroom gîte for six with a full kitchen, a 16-minute walk from Port de la Meule, roughly €2,355 for a July week.

Ker Chalon and Les Vieilles — Beaches at the Door
These are the east end's two beach areas, on different coasts. Ker Chalon sits behind the sandy north-east shore, around a kilometre and a half from the port, with Plage de Saint-Aubin and Plage de Ker Châlon. Les Vieilles is on the south-east coast below La Croix: golden sand framed by dark granite, with rock pools at low tide.

Both suit families who want to walk to the sand and couples who want a sea view. The Ker Chalon side is the better all-rounder, close enough to walk into town for dinner. Les Vieilles is more remote, a holiday-house world. Neither works if you want restaurants on the doorstep.
Best for: beach-first families, couples, a splurge stay.
Pros
- Beach on foot
- Ker Chalon is still close to Port-Joinville
- The island's top-rated beachfront hotel
Cons
- Les Vieilles is the far end from the ferry
- Few shops once you leave the port
- Beach houses sell out first for summer
Getting around: from the Ker Chalon shore, Port-Joinville is 15–20 minutes on foot or about 6 by bike. From Les Vieilles, Port-Joinville is 20–25 minutes by bike, Saint-Sauveur about 8.
Where to stay in Ker Chalon and Les Vieilles

- Mid-range — La Maison de Viviane — three-bedroom, one-bathroom house with a garden on Chemin des Vieilles, two minutes from the beach. No price showed for our test dates either; it books early.
- Splurge — Les Hautes Mers — 17-room Fontenille Collection hotel on the shore east of the port, about €235–255 a night for two in October 2026. Sea-view pool, spa, balconies and interconnecting rooms; rated 9.5.
- Splurge — Maison de vacances pleine de charme proche océan — four-bedroom, two-bathroom house on Rue Pierre Henry, roughly €2,545 for a July week. Beach and port both on foot.
Ker Bossy and Ker Pissot — Quiet Lanes, Lower Prices
Between Port-Joinville and Saint-Sauveur lie the interior hamlets, Ker Bossy and Ker Pissot among them: lanes of low whitewashed houses, gardens behind walls, pine and heath around. There is nothing to do here, which is the point. You are 1.5 to 2 kilometres from the port, a few minutes by bike, away from the summer traffic of the quays.

It suits families with bikes who want a garden for less, and couples after a B&B with no crowds. It is not for anyone without a bike: the walk to the beach or port is fine once, tiresome daily.
Best for: families on a budget with bikes, couples wanting quiet.
Pros
- Calm residential lanes
- A few minutes by bike from the port and Saint-Sauveur
- Lower prices than the harbour
Cons
- No shops or restaurants on foot
- No beach on foot
- Most listings are on rental platforms, not hotel sites
Getting around: Port-Joinville 5–8 minutes by bike, Saint-Sauveur about 5, Port de la Meule about 10.
Where to stay in Ker Bossy and Ker Pissot
- Mid-range — Horizons de l'Île — adults-only B&B with sun terrace and garden near Ker Bossy, roughly €860 for a July week for two. Rated 9.7; breakfast included.
- Mid-range — Séjour indépendant chez l'habitant — independent guest room with breakfast on Rue Georges Clemenceau, the road south out of town towards Ker Pissot, about €175 a night for two in autumn 2026.

What It Costs, and When to Book
Houses first, hotels second. The island has a handful of hotels and B&Bs; almost everything else is a rental house, gîte or small apartment. That is how we have stayed every time, and how the island works: kitchen, garden, fish market, bikes in the yard.
Price bands (checked October 2026, two adults unless stated)
- Small apartment or two-bedroom house: from about €100 a night outside summer, roughly €800–1,250 for a July week.
- Family house with three or four bedrooms: roughly €1,500–2,550 for a July week.
- Port hotels (Atlantic, L'Escale): from about €80 outside summer to around €150 in late October.
- Top hotels (Les Hautes Mers, La Mission): roughly €235–310 a night in October, more in summer.
- Our three whole-house weeks: about €815 (July 2015), €1,510 (July 2021) and €859 (August 2024).
When to book. July and August are high season, and the best houses go months ahead. June and September give warm days for less. Many restaurants and rentals close from November to March.
How rentals work. In summer most houses let by the week, often Saturday to Saturday; all three of ours did. Expect a deposit (€500 for our 2024 house), a cleaning fee or compulsory clean, and no bed linen unless stated; sheets can be hired on the port. Look for a washing machine, bike parking and a cot if needed. A tourist tax is added per adult per night.
Ferries in 2026. Yeu Continent now prices its fast boats by season; in 2025 an adult return was €42.40 booked more than a month ahead (€47.20 within a month), and under-fours travel free. Compagnie Vendéenne lists an adult return at €45.60 for 2026.
Where This Fits in the Trip
Most people pair Île d'Yeu with a few days on the Vendée coast, and the ferry shapes the plan: a morning boat, bikes on the quay, at the house before lunch. Our travel guide covers the crossing and budget, things to do the beaches and market, and the Côte Sauvage walk the cliffs and the Vieux-Château at sunset.
A day trip works on paper, but the evenings, when the day-trippers leave and the harbour goes quiet, are the reason to stay.

FAQ
What is the best area to stay on Île d'Yeu? Port-Joinville or its edges: the ferry, fish market, bike hire and most restaurants are there, and every beach is within about 25 minutes by bike. Choose Saint-Sauveur, Ker Chalon or Les Vieilles for quiet and a beach on foot.
Are there hotels on Île d'Yeu? Only a handful: the Atlantic Hôtel and L'Escale in Port-Joinville, Les Hautes Mers east of the port and La Mission in Saint-Sauveur. Most visitors rent a house by the week, as we did on all three trips.
Can you take your car to Île d'Yeu? Yes, on the Yeu Continent cargo ferry (70 minutes), booked by phone. A return for a 4–4.5 m car costs €688.30 in 2026 if booked more than a month ahead. Most people leave the car on the mainland and hire bikes.
Which ferry goes to Île d'Yeu? Yeu Continent sails from Fromentine all year (about 30 minutes) and is the only company that carries bikes and cars. Compagnie Vendéenne adds seasonal foot-passenger crossings from Fromentine, Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and Barbâtre.
Is bed linen included in Île d'Yeu holiday rentals? Often not. Our 2024 house did not supply sheets and suggested hiring them at the port. Check each listing, and check whether cleaning is compulsory or a flat fee.
